Katie Meadowcroft is a full time student at Loyola College in Maryland completing her B.S. in Biology and Psychology, on the Dean’s List, in a condensed three year program.   She will be attending Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in the fall of 2009 to obtain her second Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

Katie is an active volunteer at The St. Ambrose Family Outreach Center, which is a program of St. Vincent DePaul of Baltimore.  With her background in psychology, she acts as both a mentor and tutor to provide support for optimum middle childhood development to children of low-income families.  Through her work at St. Ambrose, Katie realized that economic circumstances and racial/ethnic backgrounds are two consistent factors that significantly impact the academic achievement of students in grades 1-8.

The achievement gap in schools occurs as a result of these factors.  Not all students are receiving the same enriching education that is the key to success in today’s society.   As Miss Maryland International, she will work as one of the Education Equality Project’s signatories and as a partner of the Council of the Great City Schools to nationally foster the adoption of policies that embody a core set of principles necessary for the swift, decisive, nontraditional action required to finally bring equity to our education system.

When Katie is not busy promoting her platform, Enriching Lives Through Education: Bridging the Urban Gap, she enjoys riding her adopted pony, Delilah, and running 5K races with her sister, Stephanie.
